ABOUT ray

I’m Ray Montecalvo — a professional audiobook narrator with a passion for making words matter.

For me, narration isn’t just about reading aloud. It’s about capturing the heart of a story, the voice of an author, the emotion behind the facts, and the nuance that makes each project unique. Whether it’s a tightly plotted thriller, a thought-provoking nonfiction title, or a philosophical deep-dive into human nature and meaning, I bring it all to the microphone — with care, presence, and precision.

An older man with glasses, a white beard, and a pink shirt sitting outdoors on a white bench reading a newspaper, next to a modern red sculpture, with trees and a building in the background.

My voice is confident, sophisticated, and insightful. I bring a calm authority to nonfiction, a compelling intensity to fiction, and a thoughtful touch to the sciences and philosophy. But more than that, I bring a commitment to serving the work — honoring the writer’s vision and delivering a polished product that connects with listeners.

SOME FACTS ABOUT ME…

I’m a retired physician and now live in Naples, Florida where I work out of my home studio.

Reading has always been my passion, and even though I went to medical school, I always knew I’d come back to audiobooks someday.

I’m a proud husband, father, and grandfather.

How’d I get here? From Medicine to Microphone.
(…And a few forks in the road.)

When it became clear I wasn’t destined to play shortstop for the New York Yankees, I found solace in the theater. Equally compelling? An obsessive interest in the life sciences.

In college, I hit my first big fork in the road: theater or medicine? I took what some might call “the easy way out” — I went to medical school. But the acting bug lay dormant, waiting.

During my medical residency, I recorded my first “books on tape” and knew, without a doubt, what I wanted to do when I retired. Nearly 40 years later, that day has come.

History, social and political science, popular science and medicine, suspense, thrillers, true crime, sci-fi, historical fiction – turning an author’s words into magic for the listener is my passion! As for baseball, Yogi Berra said it best… “When you come to a fork in the road, TAKE IT!”

When I’m not narrating, you might find me enjoying good conversation, diving into history and philosophy, or indulging my lifelong curiosity by traveling the world. I bring that same curiosity and passion for understanding into every project I voice.
